Description
Standing Bird of Paradise Pose challenges balance and flexibility by engaging the standing leg’s quadriceps and glutes to maintain stability, while the bound arms open the shoulders and chest. The lifted leg’s hamstrings and inner thigh receive a deep stretch as it is extended, requiring significant hip and hamstring flexibility. A standing balance pose characterized by one leg lifted and extended forward while holding the foot with one hand, creating an open, upright posture. It is typically included in standing sequences as a peak pose or advanced balance challenge. Part of the standing balance family, it is practiced on both sides and often follows preparatory hip openers and hamstring stretches. Known as svarga dvijasana in Sanskrit, it is named for the bird of paradise, reflecting the pose’s elegant, expansive shape.
