Description
Bridge Pose (Setu Bandha Sarvangasana) is a backbend done lying on the back with knees bent, lifting the hips. It actively engages the glutes and hamstrings to press the hips upward, and the spinal extensors work to arch the back. As the pose is held, it stretches the front of the hips (hip flexors) and thighs, and opens the chest – especially if the shoulders tuck under – creating a stretch across the pectoral muscles while strengthening the back side of the body. A backbend performed lying on the back with the hips lifted to create a bridge-like arch. It is commonly used in warm-up sequences or as a gentle backbend to open the chest and spine. Classified within the backbend family, it often follows supine poses and precedes deeper spinal extensions or hip openers. The Sanskrit name means "supported bridge pose."
