Description

Camel Pose (Ustrasana) is a deep kneeling backbend that opens the entire front body. It stretches the hip flexors and quads as the hips press forward, and intensely opens the chest and shoulders as the spine arches back. The erector spinae (back muscles) along with the glutes and hamstrings engage to support and control the backbend, preventing compression in the lower back as the head and shoulders reach toward the feet. A backbend performed from a kneeling position with the chest lifted and hands reaching toward the heels, creating an arched shape through the spine. It is commonly included in warm-up or peak backbend sequences to open the front body and increase spinal flexibility. Classified within the backbend family, it often follows preparatory poses like low lunge and precedes counterposes such as child’s pose. The Sanskrit name means “camel,” reflecting the posture’s resemblance to the animal’s curved form.
