Description
Cat Pose (Marjaryasana) involves arching the spine upward from a hands-and-knees position, which actively engages the abdominal muscles and stretches the muscles of the back. As the belly draws in and the spine rounds, the erector spinae muscles and extensors of the neck get a gentle stretch. The shoulder blades widen, releasing tension in the upper back, and the neck is relaxed with the head dropping toward the floor. This pose increases spinal flexion and massages the back body, helping to improve mobility and relieve tension along the spine. Cat pose, kneeling, rounded spine. A spinal flexion pose with the back rounded upward and the head and tailbone drawn inward. Commonly included in warm-up sequences to increase spinal mobility and prepare the body for deeper backbends or seated postures. Part of the cat-cow pair, often practiced alongside its complementary spinal extension pose. Known as bidalasana or marjaryasana in Sanskrit, both meaning "cat pose."
