Description

Seated Cow Face Pose (Gomukhasana) deeply stretches the hips and shoulders simultaneously. With the legs crossed and knees stacked, the outer hips and glutes are stretched, and if the arms are clasped behind the back, one triceps and the opposite chest/shoulder are stretched. The pose requires an upright spine, so the core and back muscles engage to support the torso as the shoulders and hips open. A seated pose characterized by stacked knees and arms clasped behind the back, creating a shape reminiscent of a cow’s face. It is commonly used in seated sequences for hip and shoulder opening, often following preparatory poses like seated forward bends and preceding twists or backbends. Practiced on both sides to maintain balance, it is part of the hip-opening and arm-stretching pose families. Named gomukhasana in Sanskrit, meaning “cow face pose.”
