Description
Locust Pose (Salabhasana) is a prone back-strengthening pose that engages the entire posterior chain. The lower back, glutes, and hamstrings contract powerfully to lift the chest and legs off the ground, strengthening those muscles. Meanwhile, the shoulders draw back and down as the arms reach alongside the body, which helps open the chest slightly and counteract forward slouching, though the primary focus is on building strength rather than stretching. Locust pose, belly down back strength. A prone backbend with the torso lifted and arms extended alongside the body. Typically included in core and back-strengthening sequences, often as a preparatory or counterpose to forward bends. Classified within backbend poses, it is usually practiced after prone stretches and before deeper spinal extensions. The name references the locust insect, reflecting the lifted, elongated shape of the body.
