warrior 1

Description
Warrior I is a powerful closed hip standing lunge that strengthens the legs, glutes, and core while opening the front of the hips. The front knee bends deeply as the back foot anchors, creating a stretch in the hip flexor of the back leg. Reaching the arms overhead also provides a gentle stretch to the torso and shoulders, making Warrior I a full-body pose that builds stability in the lower body and mobility in the upper body. A standing lunge with the front knee bent and the arms raised overhead, creating an extended vertical line. Commonly included in standing sequences to develop strength and stability before more dynamic or balancing poses. It belongs to the warrior pose family and is typically practiced on both sides. Known as Virabhadrasana 1 in Sanskrit, it honors the warrior Virabhadra from Hindu tradition.
