Description

Chair Pose is a vigorous standing posture that resembles sitting back into an invisible chair. This pose powerfully engages the quadriceps and gluteal muscles, as the knees are deeply bent and weight is shifted into the heels. It also activates the core to stabilize the torso and protects the lower back by encouraging a neutral spine. With arms reaching upward (or hands at heart center), Chair Pose also works the shoulders and upper back. The combination of strengthening the legs and lengthening the spine makes Utkatasana an excellent pose for building heat and endurance in the body. A standing pose characterized by bent knees and hips lowered as if sitting on an invisible chair, with arms extended upward or forward. Commonly used in warm-up sequences and standing series to build strength and prepare for deeper bends or balances. It belongs to the standing bend family and is often preceded by mountain pose and followed by forward folds or lunges. Known as Utkatasana in Sanskrit, the name translates to "fierce pose."
