Description

Downward-Facing Dog Pose is an inverted V-shaped posture that engages the upper body and legs while lengthening the spine. It stretches the hamstring and calf muscles in the backs of the legs and builds strength in the shoulders and arms. This foundational pose is often used to transition between sequences, providing an all-over back body stretch and a moment to gather energy in many yoga practices. An inverted forward-bending pose with the body forming an inverted V shape, hands and feet grounded and hips lifted. Commonly used as a transitional pose or resting posture in sequences, it appears frequently in sun salutations and standing flows. Classified within arm balances and inversions, it often follows plank or chaturanga and precedes standing poses or forward folds. Known in Sanskrit as Adho Mukha Śvānāsana, meaning downward-facing dog.
