Description

Three-Legged Downward Dog is a variation of Downward Dog performed by lifting one leg toward the sky. This asymmetrical pose challenges your balance and core stability while providing an even deeper opening in the standing leg’s hamstrings and the lifted leg’s hip flexors. It engages the shoulders and arms as they bear weight, and introduces a gentle rotation in the lifted hip, offering a hip-opening benefit similar to split preparations. An extension of the downward-facing dog position where one leg is lifted vertically while the other remains grounded, creating a three-pointed shape with hands and one foot. Commonly included in standing or arm balance sequences as a transition or preparatory pose to build strength and balance. It is a bilateral pose with left and right side variations and often follows downward dog or precedes poses like plank or lunge. Known in Sanskrit as eka pada adho mukha svanasana.
