reclined hero

Description
Reclined Hero Pose (Supta Virasana, Saddle) deeply stretches the quadriceps and hip flexors as the body reclines backward from a kneeling position. Lying supine in this pose also opens the lumbar spine and chest; the abdominal muscles and hip flexors are extended while the glutes and spinal extensors engage slightly to control the descent and protect the lower back as it arches. A reclining pose where the practitioner sits between the heels with the torso extended backward to rest on the floor or support. It is often used as a deep hip and thigh opener during cool-down or as a preparatory stretch for seated meditation. Classified within the hip opener and backbend families, it commonly follows kneeling poses and precedes supine stretches. Known as supta virasana in Sanskrit, it is a variation of the hero pose.
