Description

Pigeon Pose (Sava Kapotasana) provides a deep stretch for the outer hip and piriformis of the front leg, while simultaneously lengthening the hip flexors and quadriceps of the back leg. The glutes and core engage to keep the hips square and support the spine as it extends upward, protecting the lower back as it sinks into the stretch. Pigeon, Reclined pigeon, Sleeping pigeon A seated hip opener with one leg bent forward and the other extended behind the body, creating a deep external rotation in the front hip. Frequently used in middle or late stages of practice to increase hip mobility and prepare for deeper backbends or seated poses. Classified within hip-opening poses, it is commonly practiced on both sides to maintain balance. Variations include reclining forms known as resting or sleeping pigeon, with Sanskrit names ardha kapotasana and sava kapotasana.
